Fairy tales like “Cinderella” and “The Little Mermaid” have been loved for generations, but they also carry deeper messages and emotions. In this analysis, I will compare how two articles of these stories use different techniques to connect with their readers.By looking at the use of rhetorical appeals used in the text .These articles are “The white nostalgia fueling the ‘Little Mermaid’ backlash” Brooke Newman and “The Whitney/Brandy Cinderella Was One of the Most Important Movies of the ’90s” by R Eric thomas .

Brooke Newman is a writer who focuses on racial problems and social justice ,and has a PhD in history .Her background helps her analyze the backlash against the Little Mermaid by analyzing its racial aspects .This gives her credibility when it comes to talking about race and representation in the media .In the article “The white nostalgia fueling the ‘Little Mermaid’ backlash” published in july 9 ,2019 a race critique article that focus on how races are represented in movies and society. Newman uses different rhetorical appeals to develop her ideas . The first one is when she creates credibility by discussing backlash against the Little Mermaid, a controversial issue at that moment .She uses examples from history to show how problems like this have happened before,by doing this she shows how well informed she is about the topic .According to the text , “Disney executives are no fools. They made a business decision to create films featuring all-white princesses seeking marital bliss with all-white princes for more than 70 years(Newman)”.By providing this information Newman creates credibility, making her readers become more confident .Secondly uses emotional appeal to provoke feeling to her readers .This feeling are frustration, anger and empathy .As indicated in the article , “It has been proved that underrepresentation, especially combined with discrimination, takes a toll on children of color. Numerous psychological studies have demonstrated implicit bias and feelings of racial and gender inferiority begin early in childhood”(Newman) .this quote emphasizes how she takes the issue and explains how underrepresentation has been a big problem . By doing this she made the reader show emotions and made them engage more in the text .Lastly Newman uses logos by logically explaining all this hate to the little mermaid .She explains how people are complaining about this version and they are attached to the old one. Nostalgia and racial bias were the major themes that influenced everything. She supported her points with historical evidence and examples. Convincing people with logic .The purpose of the article was to analyze the racial backlash against the little mermaid ,showing how it was very racial exclusive . The intended audience was conscious readers that are interested in issues of race and representation in social media.Considering all this we can articulate how Brooke Newman used Pathos, ethos and logos to connect with her readers.
On the other hand R. Eric Thomas a columnist for ELLE.com, where he skewers politics, pop culture, celebrity shade, and schadenfreude. R. Eric Thomas is very connected when it comes to analyzing movies and races.Being a pop culture columnist and memorist gives him authority to speak on the impact of racial presentation in films . Thomas’ audience, while also culturally engaged, was inclined toward pop culture fans who appreciate the inclusion of cultures in “The Whitney/Brandy Cinderella”. That’s why in Feb 12, 2021 he wrote the article “The Whitney/Brandy Cinderella Was One of the Most Important Movies of the ’90s” , in this article he argued how this disney musical was well developed by not only including one race but different ones .By doing this people felt the connection and the real inclusion of races when it came to changing a movie from one race to another . He creates an emotional appeal by celebrating the joy and importance of representation in the Whitney/Brandy Cinderella .He provokes positive emotions in his readers by showing them how the racial diversity was portrayed in this film.As demonstrated in the text , “After Cinderella came out, we talked about it at school. One conversation focused on the fact that people of different races coexisted without comment (R. Eric Thomas)”.This shows how people were so happy about seeing their race included in this big movie and it showed how they celebrate it by speaking about it many times. Finally Thomas uses a very informal tone ,but his argument is logically structured sound the cultural significance of diverse casting .He provides evidence from film to show how a more diverse story makes it better.
Overall, it may be said In conclusion, both articles connect with their audiences using ethos, pathos, and logos, but in different ways. Brooke Newman uses a critical tone to focus on social injustices, relying on logic and shared values . R. Eric Thomas takes a more nostalgic and positive approach, appealing to emotions and his credibility as a pop culture writer. By looking at their different strategies, we can see how each author effectively communicates their message to their readers.
